We took the necessary time to properly carry out all the checks before publicly giving our assessments on the counter-revolutionary process initiated by the new leadership of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
The dynamics around the kidnapping of the Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his partner and comrade Cilia Flores by the United States had already raised – and not just for us – serious and legitimate questions.
The unfolding of events and the choices made by the leadership headed by the Vice-president Delcy Rodriguez, have made it increasingly evident that those doubts were borne out by the facts – facts that confirm an actual dismantling of the Bolivarian revolutionary experience in Venezuela, which was initiated and built by Comrade Chávez.
What were at first presented as “tactical” concessions to avoid a clearly asymmetric conflict with the US military power have instead turned out to be a conscious political and ideological capitulation on every ground: from the economic to the international political fields.
The price of this capitulation was already evident when the US administration granted immunity to Delcy Rodriguez regarding the ongoing proceedings in certain US federal courts that, by contrast, are still keeping Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores behind bars.
The event that definitively marked the shift to the enemy’s side was the meeting between PSUV officials – that is, representatives of the governing party – and figures from the Israeli authorities.
Indeed, that meeting went beyond state-to-state relations and thus protocols and diplomatic ties that sometimes encompass even contentious dealings.
It has been, therefore, a purely political decision made by the PSUV and its officials. A decision, however, that was preceded by meetings with PSUV government officials and both representatives of the US administration and high-ranking Israeli political and military officials.
These meetings and relationships stood in contrast to the dismissal of any solidarity with a besieged Cuba and of any gratitude towards the country that had sacrificed 32 of its own fighters to protect President Maduro, and that for decades has provided medical staff and teachers that played a crucial role in the country’s social development.
Having to witness this counter-revolutionary process in a country that – alongside Cuba – had made a decisive contribution to the progressive wave in Latin America, to the ALBA, and to the concept of 21st Century Socialism, is undoubtedly painful for thousands of comrades; yet, unfortunately it is neither new nor surprising. It confirms how inherently contradictory historical processes are, including revolutionary ones where the guiding and steering them is weak.
This confirms how State-parties and mass parties lacking a selection process for their political cadres absorb all of society’s contradictions, including opportunism, corruption, a readiness to betray their principles when conditions change. We saw this happening in Europe between the 80s and 90s and more recently in Latin America, in Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru.
With this statement we are ending all relations and withdrawing our trust from the Venezuelan leaders within the government and the PSUV. However, we will continue to maintain a relationship with those comrades in Venezuela who uphold a revolutionary perspective rooted in Chavism, starting with the committees in working class districts and neighbourhoods, just as we reiterate our call for the liberation of President Nicolas Maduro and Comrade Cilia Flores.
We hope that the healthy forces within the country and society will soon find the opportunities and strength to halt and reverse the counter-revolutionary process in Venezuela.
