The Rete dei Comunisti strongly condemns the outcome of the sentences of the trial of Catalan political prisoners for the events of the referendum of 1st October 2017. The sentences of up to 13 years in prison for having allowed more than three million Catalans to express, in a totally peaceful manner, their desire for self-determination are yet another political condemnation of an authoritarian Spanish state in perfect continuity with the Franco’s regime.
All this happens in the heart of the European Union, which in words presents itself to the world as a champion of civil and democratic rights, but which in fact justifies and supports the Spanish State: as much today with these unreasonable and unjustified sentences as two years ago when the Guardia Civil attacked the defenceless population in line for seats.
